Why do I solve SAT math correctly and still get it wrong
It shows up as an equation to solve, and a question that asks for something other than x, such as 2x minus 3, or x plus 4.
The trap
The student solves the equation correctly, reaches a value for x, finds that value sitting among the choices, and picks it, because the work was right and the number is there. That choice was built out of that moment. Another choice is there for the student who performs the last step and stops one move early, and another for the one who does the steps out of order. The wrong answers contain no algebra errors. Each one is the correct procedure with its last step missing or out of order, which is why the wrong answer feels earned. It is the student's own work, unfinished.
The rule
The procedure has a defined end, and the question names it. Finish every step, then check that the number you have is the one that was asked for, not the one that appeared first.
Desmos
Technique 1 from the Desmos Strategy Guide. Type each side of the equation as its own line and click where they cross, which puts x on the screen in a few seconds. The trap is then exactly where it was, because that value of x is one of the choices. Desmos executes the solving and the finishing is still the student's: evaluate what the question actually asked for before looking at the choices.
If it keeps happening
If this one fires on three practice tests running, the student is checking whether their number appears in the choices rather than whether the procedure reached its end, and the fix is a habit of rereading the question before choosing. It is the most common Math trap in the easier second module, which makes it the first thing we would fix for a student between 1200 and 1400, and the first trap after the foundations for one in the 1000s.
