Why do I get SAT vocabulary in context questions wrong
It shows up as a short passage with one word marked, and a question asking what that word most nearly means as it is used there.
The trap
The word arrives carrying its most common meaning, and that meaning usually seems to fit the subject of the passage, which is the ambush. The test picks words whose everyday meaning fails the sentence and whose second meaning fits it, so the faster the passage is read, the firmer the wrong choice feels. Read the sentence to the end and what it is actually doing is plain, and the word has to carry that.
The rule
The first meaning that comes to mind is the one under suspicion. Check it against what the sentence is doing before you trust it.
